Kileevy derives from the Church Of The Hill, which is hardly surprising, because it is situated right at the foot of the east slopes of Slieve Gullion. There are two churches here built back to back, the westernmost one of which is the oldest.
This church has one of finest cyclopean doorways you will see anywhere. The pieces of stone are massive.
This site has a recorded history that dates back to the 5th century when a nunnery was established there. You have to wonder at the pre-history of the place and why it was chosen as the site of one of the earliest nunneries in Ireland. Was the location already associated with a female order dedicated to the Hag living on the mountain top above?
