Visit Notes

Sunday, 25th May 2003

This well is located at the rear of Faughart churchyard, tucked away behind some trees. Some steps lead down 2m below ground level to the well itself, which is housed in a little stone built structure. It's actually quite sweet.

In the west side of the graveyard is King 'Somebody's' Grave - I wish I'd listened more closely to the man at St. Brigit's Shrine (County Louth) when he told me of this place! - , which seems to be a ruined court tomb. Two finely matched entrance type stones stand in front of a mound, with what could be court stone set in front of them.

The views, which were the reason it was suggested I came up here, are simply stunning. Looking south you can see the whole of Dundalk Bay below you and even on this wet morning it was a delight to stand and look out over this sight.

Miscellanea

Thanks to the Faughart Historical Properties Preservation Society (see link below) I can now put a name to King 'Somebody'. He was Edward Bruce, the brother of Robert The Bruce of Scotland.

"Faughart has a heritage of many sites of historic interest that need to be restored and preserved for the generations of the future."

This is the website for Faughart Historical Properties Preservation Society, which was founded in 1997 to survey and assess the many sites of historical interest which are to be found throught the parish.

The website is very nicely set out and has lots of information on the area. As their projects come to fruition this will grow into a valuable resource for anyone interested in the area.
